A red 1989 BMW M3 Coupe with 10k miles sold at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , further dooming one of the finest ever drivers cars to garage queen status as each new record sale price is reached. I’m all for taking care of legendary and historic vehicles, but cars are also meant to be driven, to make memories in.

We took Red Bull to the clouds today. We may have gotten a rock chip, but it was worth it.

A couple years ago a beautifully over-restored SAAB 95 sold for $40,000 and for a while every scrap yard or bumpkin with one rotting in their backyard came out to sell their rusted in half 95s for $9,000 because of it. Fortunately everybody else kept their brains turned on, and prices have been normal since. I very much doubt whoever bought the 40K one could sell it for even 30K as nice as it is. Auctions say little about the market and more about one or two people really wanting to spend money.

The US-Spec E36 M3 appreciating is not a bet I would be willing to take, to be brutally honest.

I too have my “protest drives” only in an E46 M3. My advice, sell the E30, buy a sweet E46. Go faster, have more fun. Repeat with an F80, or an M135 and repeat.

You may never become the guy who makes a quarter million off a car, but money can’t buy the fin you can have in these cars. Particularly the E30 and E46. The E36 was not as good.Sorry, but true. Same is true of current turbo car. Basically, start with the E39, and skip at least a generation for every model going forward (barring a happy massive improvement).

I’ve got an e36 328 and it is fun...

But with e30 money, you could get in to the classic Porsche 911 market... Mmmm...

Solid advice, but I have the car I want.

All it takes is one person willing to pay xxx price and that is the new value. Toss in some herd thinking, peer pressure, insecurity, passion, and savvy and that pretty much explains the rest.

Probably right. The estimate was 60-75k and it went way higher.

Maybe. But more important: if you like it then keep it.

I’m not minimizing your purchase at all. Great car. But if you want the full motor verx exoerienx, try an M. It the GT350 version of the 3.

I’m re-reading this and trying to imagine your face as I suggest that you move up to the M in the M range. Hope you won’t hold it against me...Unless I can hold your E30 M against me? Is that inappropriate? Still working on recognizing boundaries.

It is! Plaid from the factory. Makes me giggle a little every time I sit in it. This is only the second time I’ve ever let the kids drive around in this car because I’m a bit paranoid about ruining it.

Even though it is a really cool car I don’t think the E36 has the pedigree to drive it’s value very high. At some point they will appreciate and maybe they are already, but a car that is known as the disappointing follow up to the E30 has limited upside IMO.

YES. Well done, sir.

My E90 M3 has plenty of rock chips, and I earned each one on the track, on backroad drives, and by daily driving my car for the last 3 years.
